Arm tissue relaxes with age, gravity and weight loss. The drooping of skin is from a stretching of the anchoring system of the arm and loss of supporting fat. Many cosmetic surgery clinics in UK will use external lipolysis machine or skin tightening laser hoping for some minor skin contracture but in majority of the cases, this is simply insufficient. Classic liposuction will further reduce the amount of fatty tissue leaving the skin even more empty and sagging. The treatment of choice is Arm Lift or Brachioplasty (arm reduction surgery).
The surgery removes excess tissue and in combination with liposuction, will reduce the circumference of the upper arm. Surgical correction depends on the amount of extra skin and how loose the supporting tissues have become. The scar for the skin excision can be placed either in axilla or placed along the inner arm if more excision is required. The intention is to place the scar in an discreet position in the resting position.
The surgery takes around 1 -2 hours and a drain is left in situ under the compression garment.
You can usually go home with analgesia the next day and the swelling will settle in around 4-6 weeks with compression garment. The biggest drawn back of the operation is the scarring therefore, thorough discussion with Mr Ho-Asjoe is important.
