Double eyelid surgery is a specialized procedure usually requested by Asian patients wanting to create a crease in the upper eyelid. About 50 percent of all Asians are born without a fold in the upper eyelid. These types of eyelids tend to have thicker skin and larger fat deposits than eyes with upper eyelid folds. Double eyelid surgery can consist of a single suture, or liposuction and tissue excision. Some patients require double eyelid surgery because their drooping eyelids obstruct their vision. Patients who prove a functional need for double eyelid surgery may have some or all of the procedure paid by insurance.
