AREOLA REDUCTION SURGERY
Areola reduction surgery is designed to reduce the size of the areola (the pigmented skin around the nipple), improving breast aesthetics for those who feel their areolas are disproportionately large.
Why consider areola reduction?
- Large or Elongated Areolas: Some people have naturally large areolas that affect the overall appearance of their breasts.
- Post-surgical or Post-pregnancy Changes: Pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight fluctuations may cause the areola to enlarge.
- Congenital Conditions: Conditions like tuberous breasts can result in large or asymmetrical areolas.
- This procedure can be performed on both men and women and is often combined with other breast surgeries like augmentation or reduction for a more balanced appearance.
Areola reduction procedure
Performed under local anesthesia (with or without sedation), the surgery typically involves:
- Marking and Planning: The surgeon marks the desired size and shape before making any incisions.
- Incision and Removal: Excess skin around the areola is removed, reducing its size, and the skin is stitched in place.
- Nipple Reshaping (if necessary): In cases of significant asymmetry, the nipple may also be reshaped or repositioned.
The procedure takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour and is done on an outpatient basis.
Aftercare and recovery
- Compression Garment: A supportive bra or compression garment may be recommended to reduce swelling.
- Pain Management: Discomfort is usually mild and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief.
- Activity Restrictions: Avoid strenuous chest activities for 4–6 weeks to aid healing.
Scarring: Scars are minimal and usually fade over time. - Follow-Up: Regular check-ups will monitor healing and ensure no complications.
Areola results
Areola reduction enhances breast symmetry and proportions, offering increased confidence. Final results are visible after several months as swelling subsides.
