Brachioplasty (Arm Lift, Arm Reduction)
Brachioplasty, also known as an arm lift or arm reduction surgery, is a cosmetic procedure designed to address the sagging or drooping skin that can occur on the upper arms due to aging, significant weight loss, or gravity. Over time, the skin on the upper arms may lose its elasticity, resulting in a "bat wing" appearance. In these cases, an arm lift can provide a more toned and youthful appearance by removing excess skin and tightening the remaining tissue.
Why Consider Brachioplasty?
This procedure is often sought by individuals who have experienced:
- Significant weight loss: After weight loss, the skin may not fully retract, leaving behind loose, sagging skin.
- Ageing: As part of the natural aging process, skin loses elasticity, leading to drooping or hanging tissue.
- Genetics: Se people are naturally predisposed to looser skin in the upper arms.
- While some non-surgical treatments likeom skin tightening lasers or external liposuction devices are advertised, these are often insufficient for people with significant skin laxity. Brachioplasty provides a permanent solution by physically removing the excess skin.
What happens during Brachioplasty?
Brachioplasty involves the removal of excess skin and tissue from the upper arms to create a smoother, firmer appearance. The procedure typically follows these steps:
- Consultation and Planning: The surgeon assesses the degree of sagging and discusses the best incision placement based on the amount of skin to be removed. The incision can be placed either in the axilla (underarm) for minimal skin removal or along the inner arm for more extensive tissue excision.
- Incision and Removal: Under general anesthesia, the surgeon makes an incision along the marked areas, excising the excess skin. In many cases, liposuction may also be used to remove fatty tissue for a more sculpted result.
- Tightening: After the removal of excess tissue, the remaining skin is tightened, and the incision is carefully closed.
The procedure typically takes between 1-2 hours, depending on the extent of the surgery, and is done under general anesthesia.
Aftercare and recovery
- Compression Garment: A compression garment is usually worn for several weeks after surgery to help reduce swelling and support the healing tissues.
- Swelling and Bruising: Some swelling and bruising may occur, but these symptoms usually subside in 4-6 weeks.
- Pain Management: Patients are given pain relief medications to manage any discomfort during recovery. Mild soreness is common but manageable.
- Drainage: A drain may be placed under the skin to remove any excess fluid that may accumulate during the early stages of recovery.
- Follow-up Care: Regular follow-up appointments are essential to monitor the healing process.
Most patients can return home the day after surgery, but some may need to stay overnight if more extensive work was performed. Strenuous activities should be avoided for at least 6 weeks.
Brachioplasty Results
The results of brachioplasty are generally long-lasting, provided the patient maintains a stable weight and healthy lifestyle. The final outcome will reveal a more toned, shapely arm with a smoother contour. However, there will be a scar, which is placed in a discreet location depending on the type of incision.
Considerations to take into account:
- Scarring: The biggest consideration with this surgery is the visible scarring. While the scar is typically placed in an area that can be easily hidden (e.g., under the arm or along the inner arm), it is important to discuss scarring expectations with your surgeon.
- Suitability: Brachioplasty is best suited for individuals with excess skin and tissue. Those with only minimal fatty tissue or who are primarily concerned with muscle definition may benefit more from non-surgical treatments or liposuction alone.
