MOLE AND SKIN LESION SURGERY
Most skin lesions such as moles, skin tags, and cysts are non-cancerous.
These lesions are situated at different levels of the skin and take on different appearances. Nevi or moles are lesions on the superficial level of the skin. They can either be from birth ‘congenital” or appear later on in life. They can be raised, flat, pigmented, or of skin colour. Most of these lesions are benign but changes in them should always be checked.
You may be concerned with changes such as colour or size or simply dislike the appearance or position of the body. If so, the lesion can be removed under local anaesthetic and if there is any concern, the specimen can be sent to a laboratory for examination under a microscope.
Deeper lesions like a sebaceous cyst and lipoma are common and present as small lumps with normal skin on the top. This treatment is also surgical and depending on where they are situated on the body, they can be removed under local or general anaesthetic.
Most of the above procedures will be covered by health insurance, but some policies will classify the removal of lesions as cosmetic surgery. Check with your provider prior to consultation and treatment. Consultation and treatment can take place on the same day with authorization from the provider. Mr Mark Ho-Asjoe practices within the limits of the major insurance companies.
