Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery or cosmetic surgery, in particular, is performed to improve either the appearance of a body part, following injury or accident or to redesign their body’s contour and shape for example. Alternatively, it can be used in the elimination of wrinkles, varicose vein treatment or eliminating balding areas. Overall, various plastic surgeries make men and women feel more confident about their looks and appearance. Hence it’s the reason why plastic surgery is becoming increasingly more popular with time.

Factors such as advancements in surgical techniques, reduced costs, and availability of skilled cosmetic surgeons are also behind the surge in the number of surgeries carried out per year. On an estimate, the total number of plastic surgeries has increased by ninety-eight percent in the last ten years and continues to rise. But which popular plastic surgeries are in demand?

Popular Plastic Surgeries that are in demand

  1. Liposuction

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes extra fat from specific areas of the body. Men and women throughout the world and in the U.K. take help of a cosmetic surgeon to remove fat from the areas such as the abdomen, arms, buttocks, neck, hips, and thighs.

There can be different techniques for a liposuction procedure. The surgeon decides which technique will best suit the patient depending upon his or her treatment goals, and the area of the body to be treated.

Tumescent liposuction is the most common technique in which a saline solution, a numbing agent and a vessel constrictor are infused into the body’s area which has to be treated. This solution along with fat is suctioned out with the help of small hollow instruments known as cannulas. Infusion of liquid can cause fluid retention for a short period that becomes normal in a few days.

The second popular procedure is Ultrasonic-Assisted Liposuction (UAL) in which ultrasonic energy is used to melt fat from fibrous areas of the body. The liquefied fat is then suctioned out of the patient’s body.

The less popular liposuction techniques are Laser-assisted liposuction (LAL) and Power-assisted liposuction (PAL). In laser-assisted, a high-intensity laser light breaks down fat. The emulsified fat is then removed with the help of a cannula.

Power-assisted liposuction (PAL) uses the vibration of rapidly moving cannula to pull out tough fat easily with more precision. It is particularly useful in cases where large volumes of fat are needed to be removed.

The average time taken by the patient to return to work is three to four weeks depending on the area(s) selected for the treatment.

  1. Breast Augmentation

Another surgical procedure high on demand is breast augmentation. Women all over the world are getting this surgery done for several reasons such as enhancement of their body contour, restoration for loss of breast volume after pregnancy and to balance a difference in breast size.

The plastic surgeon inserts silicone implants through an incision in the natural crease beneath the breast to increase breast volume and cup size. A thorough consultation with the doctor is mandatory. The surgery takes around an hour to get completed and the recovery time is one or two weeks for normal activities. If the patient dislikes the idea of silicone implants, fat harvested from other parts of the body using liposuction can be transferred to the breast using cannula is possible in specific cases.

  1. Blepharoplasty

The third most popular plastic surgery is Blepharoplasty or Eyelid reshaping surgery. As sagging skin or extra skin over eyelids may cause impaired vision in patients, the surgery allows the patient to help improve vision. Removal of the excess upper eyelid skin will help with the “tired look” that patient wants to improve. It also diminishes the aging appearance of the patient.

People are also getting a lower eyelid surgery done to reduce the chronic puffiness or wrinkling for a more youthful appearance. Fat pads under the eyes are also removed in the lower lid procedure. Patients can typically go home the same day of the procedure.

  1. Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck is becoming extremely popular, especially among women who have excess skin after pregnancy. This surgery helps remove excess skin from the middle and lower abdominal region of the patient. It gives a slimmer waistline and youthful look to the patient.

One can also take advantage of abdominoplasty to repair midline protrusion caused by split muscle or hernia. Patients with massive weight loss and skin laxity consider a total body lift or circumferential body reduction for improved looks.

  1. Rhinoplasty

Another common surgery is Nose surgery or Rhinoplasty. It helps patients who want to improve the appearance of their nose to bring it into balance with the rest of the face. Few reasons for undergoing nose surgery can be large nose tip, deviation or dorsal hump in the nose. In some complex surgeries, to refine the areas of the nose, additional cartilage may be required from any other body part.
